A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to broadcasting of athletic competitions sponsored or
sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 33, Education Code, is
amended by adding Section 33.0833 to read as follows:
Sec. 33.0833. BROADCASTING OF ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS. (a)
In this section, "broadcasting" means transmitting sounds and
images through television or over the Internet.
(b) The University Interscholastic League shall adopt rules
and policies that encourage and permit the broadcasting of each
athletic competition sponsored or sanctioned by the league that
occurs more than 100 miles away from the campus of a school
participating in the event, regardless of the day of the week on
which the competition occurs.
(c) The University Interscholastic League may not adopt a
rule or policy that prohibits the broadcasting of an athletic
competition described by Subsection (b) solely on the basis of the
day of the week on which the competition occurs.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
