Garcia of Del Rio is focusing new attention on an inspiring chapter in the city's history with the publication of his book Mustang Miracle that tells the story of the state champion San Felipe High School golf team of 1957; and WHEREAS, In the mid-1950s, a group of students were recruited to form a golf team at San Felipe High, which was then a segregated school; their knowledge of the game had been gained by working as caddies and playing on a hardscrabble course they had made themselves; despite having outdated and inferior equipment and no professional instruction, the San Felipe Mustangs became winners; the team finished as runner-up in the state championship tournament in 1956; the next year, they returned to the finals, the only minority players in the event, and captured the Texas state title; this triumph over all expectations inspired Mr. Garcia to write Mustang Miracle; and WHEREAS, The book is his first published work after a notable career as a lawyer; born in Del Rio in 1955, he spent his formative years working in potato and onion fields with his family; he graduated from San Felipe High School as class salutatorian in 1972 and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he received his bachelor's degree in government at the age of 19; Mr. Garcia then earned his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law and in 1980 was appointed as Del Rio's first full-time city attorney; five years later, he moved to San Antonio and established a successful private practice; and WHEREAS, In January 2011, he retired from full-time work to concentrate on consulting and writing and also to nurture his golfing career; as a professional, Mr. Garcia has played in several qualifiers for the Champions Tour and is a regular on the Southern Texas Professional Golfers Association Senior Series; in all his endeavors, he enjoys the love and support of his wife, Cynthia, and his four children; and WHEREAS, As a San Felipe High School alumnus and an avid golfer, Mr. Garcia is uniquely qualified to tell the tale of the state champion Mustangs team, and the resulting saga of perseverance in the face of adversity is one that is sure to resonate beyond Del Rio and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Humberto G. Garcia on the publication of Mustang Miracle and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
