No. 1466 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young drivers, claiming the lives of nearly 6,000 American teenagers annually, including some 500 in Texas; and WHEREAS, For every teenager killed in a car crash, at least 50 more are seriously injured, making teen driver collisions one of the most urgent public safety and health crises facing our state and nation; and WHEREAS, It is widely recognized by experts that no single solution can effectively reverse this trend, so it is essential that all persons and organizations dedicated to traffic safety work together to provide education, outreach, and advocacy; and WHEREAS, The Texas Teen Safe Driving Coalition is dedicated to establishing a culture of teen safe driving to end crashes, injuries, and deaths involving teens; the organization is sponsored by the Allstate Foundation and National Safety Council, with representatives from transportation and highway safety, driver education, public health, law enforcement, business, and other areas also participating; and WHEREAS, The largest coalition of its kind in Texas, the group will focus its education efforts on the five main driving dangers: driving at night, passenger and other distractions, experience on the road, risky behaviors including speeding, and safety belt usage; and WHEREAS, Dedicated to making a measurable difference in the behavior of youth behind the wheel, the Texas Teen Safe Driving Coalition is fulfilling a vital role, and it is indeed fitting to recognize the group for its contributions to this important cause; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby honor the Texas Teen Safe Driving Coalition, join in commemorating May as National Youth Traffic Safety Month, and recognize May 16, 2011, as Texas Teen Safe Driving Day; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Texas Teen Safe Driving Coalition as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
