No. 1468 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the loved ones of Roy Franklin Lewis of El Paso, who passed away on March 19, 2011, at the age of 76; and WHEREAS, Born on July 4, 1934, in La Mesa, New Mexico, Roy Lewis distinguished himself as a talented athlete at an early age; he played for American Legion and high school baseball teams in both El Paso and Las Cruces, twice earning all-state honors in New Mexico; he then went on to play in the El Paso city leagues and with the La Mesa Blue Jays, accepting a scholarship to Sul Ross State University in 1954; and WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis was a valued member of the Lobos roster, and during his undergraduate years at Sul Ross, he also played with the Alpine Cowboys semipro team; after earning his bachelor's degree, he coached at Jal High School in New Mexico and taught school in Lima, Peru; subsequently, he returned to Texas to earn his master's degree at his alma mater and went on to serve as head baseball coach at Sul Ross; and WHEREAS, In 1975, Mr. Lewis entered a new profession with State Farm Insurance, and he soon became one of the top agents in New Mexico; he transferred to El Paso in 1980, and over the course of his notable career, his work was recognized with a number of honors, including the Crystal of Excellence award and lifetime membership in the President's Club, given to those who consistently rank in the top 50 of all agents nationwide; and WHEREAS, Also active in his community, Mr. Lewis contributed to his fellow residents through his work with the Downtown Rotary Club, and he encouraged others to participate in this worthwhile organization; a member of the Circle of Life Society and the Celebrity Chef and Children's Christmas Party committees, he also shared his time to benefit the Five Points Association; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Lewis enjoyed the loving support of his wife and partner of 43 years, Ramona Doolittle Lewis; and WHEREAS, Roy Lewis touched countless lives with his kindness, wit, and generosity; while his death brings immeasurable sorrow to many, he leaves behind a legacy that will long be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Roy Franklin Lewis and extend deepest sympathy to his wife, Ramona Lewis, and to all those who mourn the passing of this esteemed man; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Lewis.
