82R22183 MGR-D By: Hughes H.R. No. 1478 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Gayland Howell received the 2010 Man of the Year and B. R. Short Community Spirit awards from the Mineola Chamber of Commerce on February 15, 2011; and WHEREAS, Since moving to Mineola less than four years ago, Gayland Howell has sought to make a difference in the town he now calls home; he is serving his second year as president of the Mineola Civic Center board and he is a member of the Main Street advisory board and chair of the May Days festival; he is also a former president and current membership chair of the Mineola Kiwanis Club as well as a George F. Hixson Fellow in Kiwanis International; and WHEREAS, Mr. Howell is active in Caring and Sharing, and he has been part of efforts that helped Mineola to attain Certified Retirement Community status; he has further distinguished himself as a director of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce, working diligently to promote the economic growth and development of the Wood County city; and WHEREAS, Before coming to Mineola, Mr. Howell was a resident of the Metroplex and a participant in many Denton civic organizations; he holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of North Texas and is involved in the North Texas Exes; retired after 37 years, he was the vice president of manufacturing at Russell Newman, an apparel company, and he also served his country in the United States military for two years; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Howell enjoys the love and support of his wife, Bonita, and he takes pride in a fine family that includes two children and six grandchildren; he attends the First United Methodist Church; and WHEREAS, The strength of our communities depends on individuals like Gayland Howell, whose tireless work in behalf of area residents and businesses has contributed immeasurably to the quality of life in Mineola; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Gayland Howell on his receipt of the 2010 Man of the Year and B. R. Short Community Spirit awards from the Mineola Chamber of Commerce and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Howell as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
