 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories
 of Fred Shely, who passed away on February 18, 2011, at the age of
 83; and
 WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio to Terry and Belle Clark Shely on
 October 5, 1927, Fred Shely grew up on the family ranch in Marathon;
 at 17, he joined the United States Merchant Marine, and he returned
 to ranching when he left the service; and
 WHEREAS, In 1947, Mr. Shely married the former Kathryn Glen
 Hegelund, and they forged a happy union that continued for more than
 60 years until her passing in 2010; the couple were the parents of a
 son, Fred, and two daughters, Terry Jean and Nancy, and later saw
 their family grow to include two additional generations; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Shely and his father purchased and operated the
 Pinto Canyon Ranch, which included goat, sheep, cattle, and mining
 operations; the Shelys made their home in Marfa, where Mr. Shely
 served on the board of Rio Grande Electric Cooperative and the Marfa
 City Council, held the office of president of the school board, and
 was a member of the congregation at First Baptist Church; the family
 later moved to Lajitas, where they managed the golf course and its
 pro shop; Mr. Shely served as the course pro and was well known for
 having five holes-in-one to his credit; he was also an amateur pilot
 who thrilled passengers with his daredevil aviation skills; and
 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Fred Shely had a generous
 heart and an adventurous spirit, and he will be greatly missed by
 all those who had the privilege of knowing him; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Fred Shely and
 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
 daughters, Terry Jean Shely Allen and her husband, Ray, and Nancy
 Shely Costantino and her husband, Joe; to his grandchildren, Robert
 Elms and his wife, Carole, Amy Allen, Mindy Wiggins and her husband,
 Cary, Nancy Belcher and her husband, Blake, and Katy Allen; to his
 great-grandchildren, Taylor and Maya Elms, Kaitlyn Wiggins, and
 Raylee and Britton Belcher; and to his other relatives and friends;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Fred Shely.
