H.R. No. 1514 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members are coming together on May 5, 2011, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Eugene Field Elementary School in Houston; and WHEREAS, Eugene Field Elementary School is located in the Houston Heights neighborhood and currently serves more than 460 students in prekindergarten through the fifth grade; ably led by principal John Hendrickson, the school has maintained an exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency since the 2008-2009 academic year; and WHEREAS, Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the vastly outnumbered Mexican army over the better equipped French troops at the Battle of Puebla in 1862; the Field Elementary Cinco de Mayo celebration will honor the cultural significance of the holiday as well as pay tribute to the heritage of those who are of Mexican descent; and WHEREAS, The events of that historic 1862 battle provide a powerful inspiration to all who hold dear the ideal of freedom from foreign domination, and participation in Cinco de Mayo festivities enriches the lives of countless individuals on both sides of the Rio Grande; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 2011 Cinco de Mayo celebration at Eugene Field Elementary School and extend to all participants in the festivities sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
