R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The City of Houston is paying tribute to the life and
accomplishments of Judge Herbert Wing Gee with the dedication of a
municipal court building in his honor on May 1, 2011; and
WHEREAS, A Bayou City native, Herbert Gee graduated from Sam
Houston High School and attended Texas Tech University and The
University of Texas before earning a bachelor's degree in
mathematics from the University of Houston; he taught math at Jeff
Davis High School from 1966 to 1969, while at the same time pursuing
a juris doctorate from South Texas College of Law; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Gee went on to become an assistant attorney
assigned to the City of Houston Municipal Courts; through the
years, he also served as an associate judge and as a prosecutor in
other municipalities, including Spring Valley, Stafford, The
Meadows, and Mount Belvieu, and he enjoyed a successful private
practice, specializing in several areas of law; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Houston mayor Lee Brown appointed Mr. Gee
as a municipal court judge, and he was subsequently selected as the
court's administrative judge and then its associate presiding
judge; he was known for his sharp intellect and commitment to
justice for all, and he mentored many members of his profession; and
WHEREAS, Judge Gee belonged to the Federal Bar Association,
the State Bar of Texas, and the Houston Bar Association, and he was
a founding member of the Asian American Bar Association of Houston;
moreover, he was often a guest speaker at legal seminars and
conferences; and
WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and
support of his wife of 44 years, Cynthia, and their son, Jeffrey; he
and his extended family formed the Gee Family Association Education
Fund of Greater Houston to support students of Asian descent in
attaining a college education; and
WHEREAS, Although Judge Gee passed away on March 12, 2011, he
made a lasting difference in the lives of his fellow citizens, and
his vision, leadership, and civic spirit remain a continuing source
of inspiration; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the Herbert Gee
Municipal Courts Building and honor the memory of Judge Gee.
