R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Friends and family are mourning the loss of Porter
Renfro, Jr., of Houston, who passed away on April 22, 2011, at the
age of 81; and
WHEREAS, Born in Corsicana on October 6, 1929, Mr. Renfro was
the fourth of 12 children of the Reverend Porter Renfro, Sr., and
Marie Allen Renfro; at the age of 18, he joined the military, and he
served his country with distinction as a member of the U.S. Army;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Renfro returned to Corsicana after his honorable
discharge from the service, and he later settled in Houston; an
entrepreneur in the hair care industry early in his career, he
subsequently worked for Coach USA bus lines and went on to have a
notable tenure with American Gear that spanned more than 25 years;
and
WHEREAS, In 1969, Mr. Renfro married the love of his life,
Althea, with whom he had a blended family; he was the devoted father
of seven children, David, Carolyn, Porter Renfro III, Porter Renfro
IV, Algenita, Jacky, and Francine; and
WHEREAS, A valued resident of the Fifth Ward community, this
esteemed gentleman was a friend and mentor to many; sharing his
talent and skill as a boxer, he taught area young people the sport
and encouraged them to maximize their potential; also active in
Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, he ably served the
congregation as a deacon; and
WHEREAS, Porter Renfro, Jr., enjoyed a life that was rich in
the intangibles that matter most, and he is deeply missed by all
those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Porter Renfro, Jr.,
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
wife, Althea; to his children, David Earl, Carolyn Patrice, Porter
Renfro III, Porter Renfro IV, Algenita and her husband, Ardie, and
Jacky and his wife, Cynthia; to his 20 grandchildren and 40
great-grandchildren; to his five sisters; and to his other
relatives and many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Porter
Renfro, Jr.
