 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The Afiya Center in Dallas is hosting an empowerment
 summit for women from May 5 to 7, 2011, and this occasion provides
 an ideal opportunity to recognize this noteworthy organization; and
 WHEREAS, Founded by Marsha Jones and La Cisha Crear, the
 Afiya Center works to decrease the prevalence of HIV/AIDS by
 providing education and support services to African American women
 and girls and other at-risk populations; HIV/AIDS is a leading
 cause of death among African American women in many age groups today
 and disproportionately affects minority populations; and
 WHEREAS, The Afiya Center takes its name from a Swahili word
 for health and wellness, and its mission is to assist women in
 transforming the management of their health; to address the needs
 of women, youth, and all people with HIV/AIDS, the organization has
 fostered support and discussion groups, and it helps establish
 connections to break down the barriers of sexism, racism, and low
 self-esteem; moreover, the Afiya Center increases awareness of HIV
 prevention and enhances women's knowledge of the biological,
 behavioral, and social justice cofactors that influence
 reproductive health issues; and
 WHEREAS, Through their dedication to HIV prevention,
 reproductive health, and the well-being of their fellow citizens,
 the members of the Afiya Center are making a lasting, positive
 difference in their community; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize the Afiya Center on the occasion of
 its May 2011 empowerment summit for women and extend to all those
 participating in the event sincere best wishes for a memorable and
 meaningful conference; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the Afiya Center as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
