H.R. No. 1676 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Demonstrating the ability to successfully balance sports and school work, 13 players from Memorial High School in McAllen were named to the 2010-2011 Texas High School Coaches Association 5A Academic All-State Football Team; and WHEREAS, To be eligible for this prestigious honor, an athlete must be a senior who has an overall high school grade point average of 92 or higher in addition to being a person of good moral character; qualifying players are nominated by the head coach of their sport, and the final selections for the team are made by factoring in SAT and ACT scores as well as academic class ranking; and WHEREAS, The Mustang players chosen for the 5A Academic All-State First Team are Josh Corso and Kristian Gorena; on the Second Team are Jordan Boone, Jason Boone, Carlo DeCandia, Jacob R. Garza, Ian Kettlekamp, Forrest Sparks, and Andres Vela; honorable mention accolades went to Joseph Caporusso, Luis Castillo, Aaron Freeland, and John Kroeker; and WHEREAS, These admirable students make up the largest group of Memorial High players ever to receive the Academic All-State designation, and they may take justifiable pride in their accomplishment; and WHEREAS, By excelling in the classroom while meeting the demands of athletic competition, the Mustang Academic All-State football players have developed a strong work ethic and a determination to succeed that will serve them well throughout their lives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Memorial High School students named to the 2010-2011 Texas High School Coaches Association 5A Academic All-State Football Team and extend to the players sincere best wishes for continued achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the honorees as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
