H.R. No. 1787 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Lorene Wallace, a teacher at Bryker Woods Elementary School in the Austin Independent School District, has been nominated for the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; and WHEREAS, The nation's most prestigious honor for kindergarten through 12th-grade math and science educators, this accolade recognizes exceptional instructors for their contributions in the classroom and for their ability to help students succeed; Ms. Wallace, a first-grade teacher, is one of three state finalists in the category of elementary mathematics; and WHEREAS, A native of Salina, Kansas, Lorene Wallace earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Nebraska--Lincoln and a master of business administration degree from The University of Texas at Austin; she worked with Motorola in Austin and Washington, D.C., and then returned to Austin, where she spent five years as a stay-at-home mom; in time, she began substitute teaching at her children's elementary school and also teaching business classes at Austin Community College; and WHEREAS, Having discovered a new vocation, Ms. Wallace completed the Region XIII Educator Certification Program and began her second career in 2004, teaching kindergarten at Becker Elementary; she joined Bryker Woods Elementary in 2005, and in 2010 she was named its Teacher of the Year; and WHEREAS, In all of her endeavors, Ms. Wallace enjoys the love and support of her husband, Timothy Pellowski, whom she met on July 4, 1986, on the steps of the U.S. Capitol; they are the proud parents of two sons, Aaron and Braden; and WHEREAS, Lorene Wallace has demonstrated the skill, knowledge, and enthusiasm that are the hallmarks of our best teachers, and she is inspiring a love of learning in her students while giving them a strong foundation on which to build; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Lorene Wallace on being nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Wallace as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
