 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The retirement of Dr. Cayetano E. Barrera III on
 December 12, 2010, brought to a close an outstanding career
 distinguished by exceptional service to his patients, the medical
 profession, and the McAllen community; and
 WHEREAS, A native with deep family roots in the Rio Grande
 Valley, Dr. Barrera was born in Mission and graduated from the local
 high school, where he was president of the student body, captain of
 the football team, and a member of the National Honor Society; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Barrera earned his bachelor's degree from Baylor
 University, serving as president of the Pre-Med Club during his
 senior year, and went on to earn his medical degree from The
 University of Texas Southwestern Medical School; following service
 in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army, he settled in McAllen and
 established Family Physicians Clinic, a practice partnership; and
 WHEREAS, Respected in the medical community, Dr. Barrera has
 served as chief of staff of McAllen General Hospital and as
 president of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians--Valley Chapter
 and Hidalgo-Starr Counties Medical Society; and
 WHEREAS, This esteemed South Texan has also been an advocate
 of a number of important initiatives, serving as president of The
 Tejano Monument, Inc., the McAllen Citizens League, and the McAllen
 International Museum of Art and Science; he has further shared his
 time and leadership with the Boy Scouts of America Rio Grande
 Council, the Rio Grande Valley Historical Collection at The
 University of Texas--Pan American, and the McAllen Economic
 Development Board; today, he serves as chair of the board at Rio
 Bank; and
 WHEREAS, Recognized for his dedicated service to his
 profession and fellow citizens, Dr. Barrera has earned such honors
 as the Doctor of the Year Award from the Texas Academy of Family
 Physicians, the Citizen's Award from LULAC, Silver Beaver and
 Paisano Awards from the Rio Grande Boy Scout Council, and the
 Excellence in Leadership Award from the International Women's Board
 at UTPA; and
 WHEREAS, Cayetano Barrera has made lasting contributions as a
 physician and generous volunteer, and he is truly deserving of
 special tribute for his enduring commitment to serving the greater
 good; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Cayetano E. Barrera III for his
 distinguished medical career and service to his community and
 extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Dr. Barrera as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
