No. 2073 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Melissa Garza has been named the 2011 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Mission Consolidated Independent School District; and WHEREAS, A fourth-grade teacher at Carl C. Waitz Elementary School, Melissa Garza holds a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in dance education and earned a bilingual teaching certification through the Rio Grande Valley Alternative Certification for Teachers program; she was a substitute teacher for three years in the Mission CISD and taught fourth grade in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD for a year before returning to Mission in 2007; and WHEREAS, Viewing her work as an opportunity to inspire and motivate young people, Ms. Garza emphasizes the importance of making good choices and strives to reward students for growth and accomplishments; she keeps up with the latest advances in educational research by attending numerous development and training sessions, and she is currently enrolled in a master's program in educational leadership; and WHEREAS, Ms. Garza comes from a musical family and has worked as a choreographer for two decades; she uses songs, dances, and short skits in her lessons and has assisted with Christmas pageants and contributed to other musical projects, including recording a song that became a motivational tool for the entire school; and WHEREAS, In her role as a team leader, Ms. Garza mentors other teachers and helps administrators with various undertakings; she also gives back to her fellow citizens through involvement in the Random Acts of Kindness ministry of The Family Church in McAllen; and WHEREAS, Dedicated to her profession and committed to her students, Melissa Garza has set an inspiring example for the young people of Mission, and she is indeed worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Melissa Garza on her selection as the 2011 Mission Consolidated Independent School District Elementary Teacher of the Year and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success with her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
