No. 2076 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Barbara Esgen Stieren of San Antonio passed away on April 25, 2011, at the age of 78, leaving her circle of family and friends to cherish their many happy memories of time spent in her company; and WHEREAS, Born on May 14, 1932, in Abilene, the former Barbara Esgen was the daughter of Dorothy Jeanette Rogers and Wienand Kelly Esgen and later the stepdaughter of Frances McGee Esgen; she attended high school in London and Cairo and graduated in 1954 from The University of Texas at Austin, where she pledged Pi Beta Phi sorority and was selected as a Sweetheart of the Sigma Chi fraternity; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Stieren was a devoted mother to her five children, Lisa, George, Wendy, Kelly, and Amy, and a warm and gracious hostess to their friends, both at the family's home in San Antonio and at their ranch in Gillett; she also took great pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Barbara Stieren's deep faith was nurtured by her involvement in the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation, where she chaired the Altar Guild for a lengthy period; active as well in a number of civic organizations, she was a dedicated member of the Opera Guild of San Antonio, which named her its fall festival honoree in 2009; Mrs. Stieren further contributed to her community through her work with the San Antonio Botanical Garden and the Junior League, and she helped produce one of the city's best-loved parades as a member of the Battle of Flowers Association; she held membership in the Argyle Club and the San Antonio Country Club, and some of her happiest times were spent bird watching in her backyard and beachcombing with her sister on Kiawah Island in South Carolina; and WHEREAS, Beloved for her warmth, kindness, and courageous spirit, Barbara Stieren enriched immeasurably the lives of her family and many friends, and she will forever hold a treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Barbara Esgen Stieren and extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: to her children and their spouses, Lisa and Wally Cox, George and Teri Stieren, Wendy and Tom Wirth, Kelly and Jim Daniell, and Amy and Chase Smiley; to her grandchildren, Heather Hardeman, Gretchen, Arthur, and Gillian Stieren, Michael Cannon, Corina Adams, Thomas and Chase Wirth, Laura Cone, Emily Perryman, James Daniell, Jr., Kelly and Amy Daniell, Michael Burgess, Samuel Smiley II, and George Smiley; to her great-grandchildren, Thomas Anthony Wirth III and Landry Lynn Wirth; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Barbara Stieren.
