H.R. No. 2170 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Leonelo H. Gonzalez Elementary School in McAllen is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011; and WHEREAS, Since its founding, Gonzalez Elementary School has promoted outstanding academic achievement, and its current students continue to benefit from the exceptional learning environment created for them by the school's dedicated teachers and administrators; and WHEREAS, The institution was named in honor of newspaper publisher Leonelo Gonzalez, who was a leader in McAllen from 1925 until his death in 1985; as a two-term member of the McAllen Independent School District Board of Trustees, he was instrumental in the effort to discontinue the policy of half-day classes for Hispanic schools, and he also worked to persuade MISD to establish preschool classes for Hispanic children to learn English; moreover, along with his wife, Cecilia, he helped found PTAs at Roosevelt and Sam Houston High Schools; and WHEREAS, Under the leadership of principal Christina Hernandez, Gonzalez Elementary has been rated "exemplary" by the Texas Education Agency, and it was named a Texas Business and Education Coalition honor roll school in both 2009 and 2010; and WHEREAS, Gonzalez Elementary has equipped countless young Texans with the knowledge and skills essential to their future success, and its 20-year history is a testament to the enduring value the community places on the education of its children; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 20th anniversary of Gonzalez Elementary School and extend to its administrators, faculty, staff, and students sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
