 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Drayton McLane, Jr., is concluding more than 18
 years as the chair and chief executive officer of the Houston
 Astros, and he is indeed deserving of recognition for the benefits
 he has brought to the Houston area; and
 WHEREAS, Since Mr. McLane and his family purchased the
 franchise in 1993, the Astros have enjoyed unprecedented success,
 making the playoffs six times since 1997; moreover, the club's
 greatest achievement to date came in 2005, when it won the National
 League pennant and played in the World Series, allowing Houston to
 have the honor of being the first Texas city to host the fall
 classic; and
 WHEREAS, An accomplished civic leader as well as a skilled
 businessman, Mr. McLane has championed a number of initiatives to
 allow the baseball team to be a positive force in the community; the
 Astros in Action Foundation has been a central part of these
 efforts, and it has provided generous support for scholarship
 funds, charity events, children's hospitals, and numerous other
 worthwhile projects; in addition, Mr. McLane has long been involved
 in a range of philanthropic, medical, educational, and
 youth-development organizations through his membership on boards
 and committees; his present commitments include service as the vice
 president of the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America, chair
 of the board of trustees for Scott & White Healthcare, and director
 of the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M
 University, and he is active in the Greater Houston Partnership and
 United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast; and
 WHEREAS, This pioneering entrepreneur also helped bring
 about a resurgence in downtown Houston with the construction of
 Minute Maid Park; since opening in 2000, the stadium has helped
 boost the economy of the surrounding area and has become one of the
 city's architectural centerpieces; and
 WHEREAS, Always a fixture at Astros games, Drayton McLane has
 demonstrated great enthusiasm and dedication in directing his
 team's operations, and his outstanding work will be remembered and
 appreciated by the citizens of Houston for many years to come; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby honor Drayton McLane, Jr., on his successful
 tenure as the owner of the Houston Astros and commend him for his
 contributions to the city; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Mr. McLane as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
