No. 2363 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Margaret Johnson Herman of Austin passed away on May 9, 2011, at the age of 93, leaving her circle of family and friends to cherish their many happy memories of time spent in her company; and WHEREAS, Born on January 25, 1918, in Palacios, the former Margaret Johnson was the daughter of Guy and Tenna Johnson; she had many happy recollections of her childhood growing up on a farm, playing with her friends and seven siblings, riding a horse to school, and augmenting the family's finances by driving a makeshift school bus at the age of 14; and WHEREAS, Margaret Johnson married Gilbert S. Herman before the beginning of World War II, and the couple raised a daughter, Anne, and five sons, Nick, Wayne, Guy, Mike, and Craig, while traveling throughout Texas and to postwar Germany and Japan for Mr. Herman's military career; ultimately they settled in Corpus Christi, where their home became an unofficial headquarters for countless teenage boys, who appreciated the wisdom, patience, good humor, and savory meals provided by Mrs. Herman; and WHEREAS, This working mother became proficient in computerized office management during her career with General Export Iron and Metal, and she was so highly valued that when the original owners sold the business, it was a condition of the sale that Mrs. Herman retain her job until her retirement; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Herman maintained an active lifestyle in her later years, mowing her yard, sharing the bounty of a large garden, and teaching a senior aerobics class at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, all well into her 80s; she was involved in the lives of her 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, and during the years she lived with her children and their families, she enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, political discussions, and attending Ballet Austin performances and sporting events at The University of Texas and at her grandchildren's schools; and WHEREAS, Beloved for her warmth, kindness, and generous spirit, Margaret Herman enriched immeasurably the lives of her family and many friends, and they will forever hold her close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Margaret Johnson Herman and extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: to her children and their spouses, Anne and Brian Harrison, Nick and Dee Herman, the Honorable Guy Herman and Lynn Blais, Michael and Teresa Herman, and Craig and Jan Herman; to her daughter-in-law, Elaine Herman; to her brothers, Ballard Johnson and his wife, Louise, and Mack Johnson and his wife, Adeen; to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Margaret Herman.
