H.R. No. 2556 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School in Edinburg are celebrating the school's 35th anniversary on May 23, 2011; and WHEREAS, One of 27 schools in the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District, Freddy Gonzalez Elementary was named after Marine Corps Sergeant Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez; the heroic Edinburg High School graduate died in action during the Vietnam War and received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest accolade for bravery; today, the school continues to pay tribute to his service by instilling values of honor, trust, and commitment; and WHEREAS, Freddy Gonzalez Elementary currently serves more than 500 children from prekindergarten through the fifth grade and is among the few public schools in Texas to receive a distinguished Great Schools Rating of 8 out of 10; and WHEREAS, Over the past 35 years, Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School has educated nearly 20,000 young residents of Edinburg, and under the skilled leadership of principal Arnoldo F. Benavides, the dedicated faculty and staff continue to promote a proud tradition of excellence; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of Freddy Gonzalez Elementary School and extend to all those associated with this fine institution sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
