No. 426 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, United States Army Major General Dana Pittard took command of Fort Bliss on July 9, 2010, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor this distinguished native son of El Paso and welcome him back to Texas; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Eastwood High School, Dana Pittard grew up in a military family; his father retired from Fort Bliss as an air defense soldier and his mother was a civilian employee of the Department of the Army; in 1981, General Pittard was commissioned as a second lieutenant from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a bachelor's degree in history, and he later earned a master's degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College; in addition, he attended Harvard University as a Senior Service College Fellow; and WHEREAS, General Pittard's career has taken him to more than 70 countries; a seasoned warrior, he led a tank company into combat during Operation Desert Storm, fought insurgents in Iraq as a brigade commander, served in Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo, and was commanding general of the Iraqi Assistance Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom; before taking his current post, he prepared soldiers for deployment as commanding general of the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, and then as deputy chief of staff of operations and training at the Army Training and Doctrine Command in Fort Monroe, Virginia; and WHEREAS, Committed to making Fort Bliss a premier national training hub, General Pittard is directing a $5 billion expansion, one of the largest at any base since World War II, in order to accommodate the returning 1st Armored Division and other combat units; while moving forward with upgrades to training facilities, he has implemented measures to enhance all aspects of soldier fitness and to improve quality of life for members of the military and their families; moreover, he has initiated efforts to save tax dollars by refining the contracting process and promoting energy efficiency and resource conservation; and WHEREAS, Major General Dana Pittard has served his nation with enormous dedication for more than three decades, and his vision, dynamic leadership, and commitment to excellence have earned the admiration of all who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby welcome Major General Dana Pittard back to the Lone Star State and congratulate him on his appointment as commanding general of Fort Bliss; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for General Pittard as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
