No. 438 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Garden City High School in the Glasscock County Independent School District has been named a 2010 Blue Ribbon School, a designation awarded to fewer than one percent of schools in the nation, and has been rated as "Exemplary" by the Texas Education Agency; and WHEREAS, The Blue Ribbon Schools program was created by the United States Department of Education in 1982 to honor public and private campuses that are either high performing or have demonstrated dramatic improvement in closing the achievement gap; just 25 schools attained this distinction in the Lone Star State for 2010; and WHEREAS, The Texas Education Agency bases its school ratings on students' performance on a battery of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tests, administered annually in the spring; the "Exemplary" rating is the highest an institution can receive; and WHEREAS, Led with skill and dedication by principal Ken Hoskins, Garden City High School serves about 125 students, half of whom are economically disadvantaged, in grades 7-12; over the past five years, 100 percent of Garden City High students have graduated, and nearly three-quarters of them attended college; additionally, seniors bound for higher education have earned more than $500,000 in scholarships, including a National Merit Scholarship, university presidential and departmental scholarships, and state academic scholarships; and WHEREAS, Through dedication, hard work, and perseverance, the teachers and students of Garden City High School have built a record of academic excellence, and their outstanding efforts have been duly recognized with the Blue Ribbon School designation and TEA's "Exemplary" rating; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Garden City High School on its selection as a 2010 Blue Ribbon School and on its receipt of an "Exemplary" rating from the Texas Education Agency; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
