 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Emily Barton was presented the 2010 Volunteer
 Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Cancer Society's High
 Plains Division on January 22, 2011; and
 WHEREAS, Ms. Barton is one of only six individuals in history
 to earn this honor, which is the most prestigious award given by the
 American Cancer Society; a truly deserving recipient, she has
 shared her time and talents with the organization for more than half
 a century; and
 WHEREAS, Since becoming a volunteer in 1959, Ms. Barton has
 served in every capacity, from fund-raising to patient services to
 advocacy; she has held nearly every committee position with Relay
 For Life, served as a contact person for mammogram unit
 appointments, and been a patient advocate at the M. D. Anderson
 Cancer Center; today, she continues her efforts as a patient
 services coordinator, assisting individuals in Crane and the
 surrounding areas; and
 WHEREAS, Ms. Barton has traveled to Austin and Washington,
 D.C., to support the fight against cancer; a legislative advocate,
 she has lobbied on issues of tobacco control and the use of tobacco
 settlement money in the Texas Tobacco Prevention Pilot Initiative;
 and
 WHEREAS, In addition to her work with the cancer society, Ms.
 Barton has promoted organ donation with the Southwest Transplant
 Alliance, assisted the American Red Cross with blood drives and
 services in the aftermath of tornados, and volunteered with the
 Battered Woman's Center; and
 WHEREAS, Her exceptional efforts have earned her recognition
 as Crane's Citizen of the Year and the Governor's Volunteer Award,
 as well as Woman of the Year, Lifesaver, and Pace Setter awards from
 the American Cancer Society; and
 WHEREAS, Emily Barton has contributed to her fellow citizens
 through a lifetime of purposeful endeavor, and in so doing, she has
 set an inspiring example of compassion and generosity toward
 others; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Emily Barton on earning the 2010
 Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Cancer
 Society's High Plains Division and extend to her sincere best
 wishes for the future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Ms. Barton as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
