 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes pride in
 its public educators, who provide an invaluable service to the
 people of Texas; and
 WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association is the
 largest association for retired public school and higher education
 employees in the nation; and
 WHEREAS, The members of this notable group continually work
 to improve their local communities, and in 2010 they donated more
 than 5.8 million hours of their time as volunteers, equivalent to a
 value of more than $121 million; to promote literacy and lifelong
 learning, they have provided more than a half-million books to
 schoolchildren through the Children's Book Project, including more
 than 120,000 in 2010; and
 WHEREAS, Conscious of the effect their health has on the
 world around them, members of the association work to preserve the
 TRS-Care program by reducing doctor visits with the Walks-A-Million
 initiative, in which during 2010 they collectively took more than
 23 billion steps toward greater wellness; and
 WHEREAS, Retiree annuity payments from the Teacher
 Retirement System of Texas have exceeded $6 billion, directly
 creating 91,500 jobs in the Lone Star State; and
 WHEREAS, The Texas Retired Teachers Association and its
 membership of nearly 70,000 are working diligently to protect
 current and future public education retirees; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize March 21 through 25, 2011, as Texas
 Retired Teachers Week; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the Texas Retired Teachers Association as an
 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
