 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The Operation Cookie program provides a taste of
 home to American military personnel around the world, and from
 January 19 to February 25, 2011, the Girl Scouts of Central Texas
 are collecting boxes of donated cookies for servicemen and
 servicewomen as part of their annual cookie sale; and
 WHEREAS, The cookie fund-raiser has been an important part of
 the Girl Scouts' business and economic literacy initiative every
 year since December 1917, helping girls learn such life skills as
 money management, teamwork, and public speaking; in 2010, 12,692
 Girl Scouts in Central Texas sold 2,109,912 boxes, raising more
 than $5 million to support their activities; and
 WHEREAS, For the past six years, Operation Cookie has been
 part of the GSCTX cookie drive, as Girl Scouts send boxes of donated
 cookies and letters of support to U.S. military men and women who
 are serving at home or overseas, as well as to wounded veterans
 recovering in military and veterans hospitals; GSCTX works with
 Operation Interdependence and Soldiers' Angels to ship care
 packages to troops overseas; and
 WHEREAS, In 2010, Operation Cookie collected 43,501 boxes of
 cookies, created 18,945 care packages, and sent 25,000 letters to
 service personnel; cookies were distributed to such places as the
 Brooke Army Medical Center, the VA hospitals in Waco and Temple,
 Goodfellow Air Force Base, and Fort Hood, among many other
 destinations; and
 WHEREAS, The Girl Scout movement inspires young women to
 become leaders and provides them with a solid foundation for future
 achievement, and the Girl Scouts of Central Texas may take great
 pride in their special efforts in behalf of the men and women of
 America's armed forces; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby commemorate the start of Operation Cookie 2011
 and commend all participants for their support of our brave troops
 at home and abroad; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the Girl Scouts of Central Texas as an expression of
 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
