SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1144
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Harlandale Independent School District for winning
the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award and for demonstrating
exceptional commitment to improving student achievement,
developing innovative programs, increasing parental
involvement, and creating opportunities for professional
development; and
WHEREAS, The Harlandale Independent School District, under
the leadership of superintendent Robert Jaklich, won the
District Award for large districts and a prize of $100,000; the
district was credited for overcoming a lack of funding and other
economic and social challenges to become a beacon of academic
excellence and opportunity in San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, Since 2008, the number of Harlandale Independent
School District campuses rated as Recognized or Exemplary by the
Texas Education Agency has nearly doubled, to 18 out of 19,
making the district one of the best school districts in the State
of Texas; and
WHEREAS, The Harlandale Independent School District, with
14,000 students, is now ranked number one in San Antonio and
seventh in the state, based on an index of academic performance
and spending, according to the Education Resource Group, and the
district rose to Recognized status for the first time in 2010;
and
WHEREAS, This award has demonstrated the resolve and
commitment of the district's superintendent, administrators,
faculty, staff, and students and the entire Harlandale
community, and it serves as a landmark moment in the history of
the district; and
WHEREAS, The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program
is the largest monetary recognition awards program for educators
in Texas and one of the largest in the nation; H-E-B began this
prestigious awards program in 2002 in cooperation with the Texas
Association of School Administrators to support public
education, to spotlight best practices, and to celebrate the work
of Texas educators; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby recognize the Harlandale Independent School
District for winning the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award and
extend to them congratulations on their outstanding success;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the district as an expression of high regard from the Texas
Senate.
