                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1173
 In Memory
 of
 Edward H. Harte
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of noted
 publisher and philanthropist Edward H. Harte, who died May 18,
 2011, at the age of 88; and
 WHEREAS, Edward H. Harte was an exemplary citizen and
 businessman whose generosity, down-to-earth character, and
 commitment to service left an indelible mark on his community; and
 WHEREAS, A graduate of Dartmouth College, Mr. Harte
 entered into his father's publishing business after having
 learned its workings as a young man; he came to Corpus Christi in
 1956 to serve as a vice president of the Corpus Christi
 Caller-Times and was named its publisher in 1962; he served in
 that position for 25 years until retirement; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Harte was an early proponent of conservation
 and donated $46 million toward the creation of the Harte Research
 Institute, and he and his brother also donated 66,000 acres of
 land to the Big Bend National Park; among the many other
 beneficiaries of his generosity were Corpus Christi Metro
 Ministries and Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi; and
 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, he was
 an inspiration to others, and although he will be deeply missed
 by his family and countless friends, he will continue to live in
 their hearts and minds for years to come; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Edward H. Harte; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Edward H. Harte.
