SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1190 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Gertrude Jack Lewis on the joyous occasion of her 100th birthday, on July 17, 2011; and WHEREAS, Gertrude was born on July 17, 1911, in Sorrell, Louisiana; one of 13 children born to Irene and Louis Jack, she moved to Weeks Island, Louisiana, with her family and worked the vegetable and sugarcane fields during her youth; and WHEREAS, She married Clarence Lewis, Sr., on October 13, 1931, and they were blessed with five children; they raised their children in the Trinity Gardens area of Houston, and the family attended Friendship Missionary Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lewis was dedicated to her work as a homemaker, and she and her husband were married 69 years, until his death in June of 2001; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lewis still resides in Trinity Gardens and lives with her son Freddie Lewis; her other devoted sons also help her out in various ways; she continues to be a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and enjoys visits from her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her three siblings, and her numerous other relatives and friends; and WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mrs. Lewis has been noted for her generosity, her courage, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby recognize Gertrude Jack Lewis as a treasured citizen of our state and extend to her congratulations on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in her honor.
