SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 140 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Teens in the Driver Seat program that has proved to be effective in decreasing the number of teen drivers killed or injured in accidents; and WHEREAS, Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people; each year, thousands of teenagers are killed nationwide, including almost 500 in Texas; for every teenager killed in a crash, many more are seriously injured, making teen-driver crashes one of the most urgent safety and public health issues now facing our state and nation; and WHEREAS, Experts recognize that no single solution can substantially reverse this trend; it is therefore essential that young people themselves play a more active and productive role in improving roadway safety for all drivers and passengers; and WHEREAS, Many Texas teenagers have dedicated themselves to this important safety mission by their involvement in the Teens in the Driver Seat program, a peer-to-peer safety program for young drivers created by the Texas Transportation Institute and sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation and State Farm Insurance; and WHEREAS, The Teens in the Driver Seat program has been introduced in more than 400 schools in Texas, and it has proved to be central to a steady decline in teen-driver crashes; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend the participants in the Teens in the Driver Seat program for their commitment to improving roadway safety for all drivers and passengers; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
