SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 239 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Alma Cardenas-Rubio, who recently received the distinguished 2010 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award for outstanding secondary school principal; and WHEREAS, Alma Cardenas-Rubio is principal of Besteiro Middle School, a Texas Education Agency Recognized School that has also gained recognition as an Accelerated School and a NASA Explorer School under her leadership; and WHEREAS, She is a graduate of Gladys Porter High School in Brownsville and began her career in education as a teacher at the school in 1994; she earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and a master's degree in educational leadership from The University of Texas at Brownsville, and she has been principal of Besteiro Middle School since 2003; and WHEREAS, The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program is the largest monetary recognition program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation; the award for outstanding secondary school principal comes with a stipend of $10,000 for the educator and $25,000 for her school; and WHEREAS, Principal Cardenas-Rubio has implemented innovative learning programs to assist students with instructional and fine arts support year-round; she values the importance of hard work, persistence, and a good education, and she conveys those principles through her communications with her students each day; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend Besteiro Middle School principal Alma Cardenas-Rubio for her outstanding work in education on behalf of the students in Brownsville and extend to her congratulations on being named the outstanding secondary school principal in the 2010 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
