SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 275 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to welcome the visiting representatives of the Houston A-Plus Challenge program and recognize February 23, 2011, as Houston A-Plus Challenge Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Houston A-Plus Challenge aims to serve as a catalyst for change in the public schools, which educate 90 percent of the children in the region; and WHEREAS, Members of the Houston A-Plus Challenge program team up with principals and teachers in targeted schools to ensure that every student is prepared for postsecondary success; and WHEREAS, Six middle schools in the region have been selected to take part in the Challenge Network, a two-year, $4.4 million pilot project sponsored by Houston A-Plus Challenge; and WHEREAS, The Challenge Network strives to help schools increase the number of students who move beyond mere proficiency and attain real readiness for postsecondary success; and WHEREAS, The Challenge Network also works to increase the capacity of teachers and school leaders to sustain gains beyond the two years of assistance from the A-Plus program; and WHEREAS, If the program proves to be as successful as anticipated, the Challenge Network plans to expand to reach 50,000 children in 70 schools throughout the greater Houston area within six years; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend all those involved with Houston A-Plus Challenge and the Challenge Network for their efforts to provide a more challenging curriculum to keep students motivated and prepare them for future success in school and beyond; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the organization as a memento of this special day.
