                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 665
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 join the citizens of Reeves County and Texans across the state in
 celebrating Reeves County Day at the State Capitol; and
 WHEREAS, Located in the scenic Trans-Pecos region of West
 Texas, Reeves County is named for former state legislator and
 Confederate Army Colonel George R. Reeves; and
 WHEREAS, The Reeves County area has been inhabited for many
 centuries; archaeological artifacts and pictographs found in and
 around rock shelters and caves attest to the presence of
 prehistoric people, and early Spanish explorers were guided by
 Jumano Indians who grew crops in the region; settlers of Mexican
 descent have long farmed the fertile Madera Valley, and the
 abundance of open rangeland, along with the arrival of the
 railroad, attracted white settlers in the late 19th century; and
 WHEREAS, Farming and ranching have continued to serve as a
 major factor in the county's economy; the discovery of natural
 gas in the 1950s and the presence of significant oil reserves
 have helped add to its economic prosperity and well-being; and
 WHEREAS, Reeves County is home to such attractions as the
 West of the Pecos Museum in the county seat of Pecos and the
 Balmorhea State Recreation Area and Lake, as well as numerous
 festivals and events that are held throughout the year, and the
 county's citizens are confidently facing the future while
 continuing to embrace their rich and colorful past; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby extend to the delegation from Reeves County a
 warm welcome and best wishes for a memorable Reeves County Day at
 the State Capitol; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
