SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 718 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Giovanni J. Mejia, who has been named to "The Commandant's Own," the official drum and bugle corps of the United States Marine Corps; and WHEREAS, Giovanni Mejia is a 2010 graduate of Hanna High School, where he was a four-year member of the Hanna Golden Eagle Marching Band; he became the band's snare captain when he was a junior; Giovanni has been playing drums since the age of five; the first band he joined was at Vela Middle School, where he won several awards; he represented the school in a Texas Music Educators Association competition and was named all-region drummer; and WHEREAS, He joined the Marine Corps through its music enlistment program and completed basic training at the United States Marine Base in San Diego, California; and WHEREAS, Giovanni is posted at the historic Marine Barracks Washington, the oldest active post in the Marine Corps, which supports both ceremonial and security missions for the nation's capital; and WHEREAS, The Marine Drum and Bugle Corps is composed of 79 enlisted marines and three officers; the elite group includes 24 percussionists; only one or two candidates for these coveted positions are accepted each year; this year, to the delight of Giovanni and his family, he was the only percussionist selected from contenders across the United States; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, hereby commend Giovanni J. Mejia for his exceptional talent and extend to him congratulations on being selected to "The Commandant's Own" Marine Drum and Bugle Corps; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
