SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 764
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Del Mar College in Corpus Christi on the momentous
occasion of its 75th anniversary, which is being celebrated
throughout the 2010-2011 academic year; and
WHEREAS, The 75th anniversary of this outstanding
institution is an ideal opportunity to recognize the many
contributions Del Mar College has made to the Coastal Bend
communities; it offers affordable, high-quality postsecondary
education to some 500,000 residents in the area; and
WHEREAS, Del Mar College employs more than 1,100 dedicated
faculty and staff members and provides a variety of programs that
prepare students for high-demand careers in health care,
business, technology, and industry, and its academic credits are
transferable to baccalaureate programs across the nation; and
WHEREAS, In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Del Mar
College awarded its 750,000th student a scholarship package for
the spring semester; 75 former students are being recognized with
the Del Mar College Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni
Award, and the college is holding its signature event, the South
Texas Round-Up, to further celebrate this milestone; the fine
arts programs are staging numerous special events, and the
college is also bringing the kick-off of the state's official
Texas Jazz Festival back to the East Campus, where the annual
event originated 50 years ago; and
WHEREAS, The college has accepted a donor challenge to
raise funds to match a $1 million pledge for scholarships during
this anniversary year, and it is preparing a time capsule to be
opened during the college's 100th anniversary celebration in
2036; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to all associated
with Del Mar College on the occasion of the college's 75th
anniversary; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
commemorate this special occasion.
