H.R. No. 152 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan truly merits special recognition, and on July 4, 2011, Lula Beatrice McGough Jordan of Dallas is marking this notable milestone; and WHEREAS, Born in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, on July 4, 1911, the former Lula McGough is the daughter of Emma Philyaue and Louis McGough; she attended Georgia Fay Glover Elementary School through the second grade before leaving to help her family by chopping cotton, keeping house, and performing various other jobs; undaunted in her determination to read and write, she learned these skills with the help of other schoolchildren; and WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan moved to Dallas at the age of 19; she married William McKinley Jordan in 1943, and three years later, the couple took in Mr. Jordan's two-month-old niece, Jeri Ann, to raise as their own; and WHEREAS, Diligent, thrifty, and resourceful, Mrs. Jordan bought her own home in 1965 and continues to reside there today; she retired from housekeeping and then devoted herself to helping children as an adopted grandparent for the Salvation Army; when her sister needed her, she traveled to Lawton, Oklahoma, to care for her until her passing; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Jordan is a valued member of Israel Baptist Church, where she sings in the choir and holds the titles of church queen and church mother; taking only vitamins to ensure her continued good health, she has never been ill, and she credits her longevity to having concern for others, working toward goals, and observing the Sabbath; in all her endeavors, she enjoys the support and encouragement of her daughter and caregiver, Jeri Ann Joiner; and WHEREAS, Friendly, kind, and genteel, Lula Jordan has greatly enhanced the lives of her family and friends over the past century, and her wisdom and experience are a source of inspiration to all; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Lula Beatrice McGough Jordan on the occasion of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Jordan as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
