H.R. No. 153 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Martin A. Canales, Jr., of Roma has distinguished himself as a dedicated civic leader whose efforts have made a positive difference in his community; and WHEREAS, Born on March 25, 1941, in Salineno to Martin A. Canales, Sr., and Paz R. Canales, Martin Canales, Jr., graduated from Roma High School in 1958; he attended business college in San Antonio for two years and then returned to Salineno to help his father run the family grocery and ranch; and WHEREAS, Mr. Canales spent 13 years employed with the City of Roma, serving as city secretary, tax assessor and collector, and director of finance; he learned a great deal about budgets, valuations, and other fiscal matters and enjoyed many rewarding interactions with residents; in addition, he was elected to the board of trustees of the Roma Independent School District and served in that capacity for seven years; and WHEREAS, In 1978, Mr. Canales was offered a job when Citizens State Bank, the first chartered bank in Roma, opened its doors; beginning as a loan officer, vault teller, and head of payroll, he advanced to the position of executive vice president and, in 1984, became president and director of the bank; he helped to found the bank's scholarship initiative, which assists deserving graduates of Roma High School, and after his retirement he chaired the bank's board of directors; and WHEREAS, Mr. Canales has shared his time and talents as a member of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service board, the Medina Electric Cooperative scholarship committee, the American and Texas Bankers Associations, and the Lions Club; a man of faith, he is an active member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma as well as the Knights of Columbus and the International Order of the Alhambra; he continues to be involved in bank meetings and in his ranching business; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Canales enjoys the love and support of his wife of more than 40 years, Sylvia, and he takes pride in a fine family that includes three children, Martin A. Canales III, Omar Canales, and Lamar Gonzalez; he has seen his children graduate from The University of Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M University, and The University of Texas at Austin, and he has welcomed six grandchildren into his family; and WHEREAS, Through his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment, Martin Canales, Jr., has helped bring about new opportunities for his fellow citizens, and he has earned the respect and admiration of all who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Martin A. Canales, Jr., for his contributions to his community and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Canales as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
