No. 174 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Starr County lost a distinguished civic leader with the passing of Jesus Alberto Solis on February 1, 2001, at the age of 63; and WHEREAS, The son of Juan and Dolores Saenz Solis, Jesus Solis was born in La Grulla on January 28, 1938; he graduated from Rio Grande City High School and attended college in Mexico City; later, he served his country in the United States Air Force and went on to graduate from the police academy in College Station; he became a deputy sheriff and then served for many years as chief deputy; eventually, he became a bailiff for Starr County and opened a successful bail bond company; and WHEREAS, Mr. Solis was deeply committed to his community; from 1976 to 1986, he was a trustee of the Rio Grande City Independent School District, and he served the board as its president; a member of the city council for six years, he resigned in order to serve as justice of the peace, an office he held until his death; in addition to his public service, Mr. Solis sought to improve the business environment and bring new companies to Rio Grande City; moreover, he was instrumental in the creation of a monument to honor the sacrifices of Starr County veterans and in the establishment of a local Boys and Girls Club; and WHEREAS, On May 28, 1970, Mr. Solis was joined in matrimony to the former Amanda Jackson; the couple shared a rewarding marriage made even richer with the addition of three children, Jesus, Juan, and Judith, and two grandchildren, Jesus and Magdalena; Mr. Solis emphasized the importance of higher education, and with his support and encouragement, all his children graduated from Texas A&M University; and WHEREAS, The life of Jesus Alberto Solis stands as an outstanding example of positive civic engagement, and his achievements remain a lasting source of inspiration; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jesus Alberto Solis and recognize his many contributions to Starr County; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jesus Alberto Solis.
