                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 104
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 join the citizens of Beaumont in celebrating the 100th
 anniversary of the birth of pioneering athlete Mildred "Babe"
 Didrikson Zaharias; and
 WHEREAS, Widely considered the world's greatest female
 athlete, Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias was born June 26,
 1911, and grew up in Beaumont; over the course of her stellar
 athletic career, she brought international fame to her hometown
 and her state; and
 WHEREAS, Named to the list of Top 10 Athletes of the 20th
 century by the Associated Press and ESPN, she was a two-time All
 American basketball player and singlehandedly won the 1932
 Amateur Athletic Union track and field team championship; she won
 two gold medals and a silver medal at the 1932 Olympics in Los
 Angeles; and
 WHEREAS, She perhaps found her greatest fame as a golfer,
 helping to found the Ladies Professional Golf Association and
 once winning 17 consecutive tournaments; she was the first
 American woman to win the British Amateur and is the only woman in
 the history of the men's Professional Golfers Association Tour to
 earn prize money, which she did twice, including winning the
 Phoenix Pro-Am event by defeating legends Byron Nelson and Sam
 Snead; and
 WHEREAS, In acknowledgement of her many accomplishments
 and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of her birth, the City
 of Beaumont has declared June of 2011 to be Mildred "Babe"
 Didrikson Zaharias Month, with a golf tournament, dinner, and
 auction to be held to raise money for the Babe Didrikson Zaharias
 Foundation; it is truly fitting that she be recognized for her
 groundbreaking achievements; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life
 and legacy of Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias and extend best
 wishes to the people of Beaumont for a memorable celebration;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
 honor of this special occasion.
