SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 35 In Memory of Janis Guerrero-Thompson WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Janis Guerrero-Thompson, who died June 7, 2011, at the age of 58; and WHEREAS, Janis Guerrero-Thompson was a native Austinite who graduated from Crockett High School and earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from The University of Texas at Austin; she enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an educator, administrator, and community volunteer, and her energy and passion had a profound impact on many lives; and WHEREAS, She served the Austin Independent School District in several capacities through the years, most recently as director for planning and community relations, where she oversaw communications, planning, fund-raising, and community partnerships; her innovative ideas on how to communicate with diverse communities and develop the district's plans for the future exemplified her leadership on important issues and her commitment to furthering the best interests of the district's schoolchildren; and WHEREAS, Among the many community organizations that benefited from her talent and expertise were Central Texas Goodwill Industries and the Girls Empowerment Network of Austin; she served on the City of Austin's Civil Service Commission and was an active volunteer with Chaplain Services at University Medical Center Brackenridge; and WHEREAS, She was honored in 2004 by Hispanic magazine as a Top Latina in Community Service, and in 2008 was named one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in Austin by La Voz de Austin, Austin Community College, and the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education; and WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and generosity, she gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her commitment to education, and her sensitivity toward others will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her life; and WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Janis Guerrero-Thompson: her husband, Chuck Thompson; her son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Jessica Thompson; and her three grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Janis Guerrero-Thompson.
