                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 68
 In Memory
 of
 Joseph H. Flom
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
 commemorates the life of prominent attorney and humanitarian
 Joseph H. Flom; and
 WHEREAS, Joseph H. Flom was an exemplary citizen who was
 widely admired throughout his profession and his community for
 his brilliant intellect, his impeccable judgment, and his
 philanthropic endeavors; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Flom joined the law firm of Skadden, Arps in
 1948 as the firm's first associate; over the course of his
 distinguished career, he guided the firm from a four-lawyer
 entity to its present status as a global law firm with 2,000
 attorneys and scores of practice areas; and
 WHEREAS, He was one of the first attorneys to push mergers
 and acquisitions to the top of corporate agendas, and he played a
 vital role in fundamentally transforming the practice of
 corporate law; and
 WHEREAS, He was active in community and professional
 affairs and was known for his generosity and commitment to social
 responsibility; he was a founding trustee of the Skadden
 Fellowship Foundation and provided support for the Gateway
 School and for cancer research at the Mount Sinai-New York
 University Medical Center Health System; he was named one of the
 lawyers of the century in 1999 by The American Lawyer; and
 WHEREAS, Joe Flom was a dedicated supporter of academics
 and the arts, and he worked to promote interdisciplinary
 research, equal opportunity, and diversity in the legal
 profession; he lent his expertise and vision to numerous
 educational and civic organizations and corporate boards, and he
 was a trusted advisor and a faithful friend; and
 WHEREAS, He was beloved by his family and all who shared in
 his life, and he will long be remembered for his generous spirit
 and his many achievements; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
 condolences to the bereaved family of Joseph H. Flom; and, be it
 further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 Joseph H. Flom.
