The bill would add a new subchapter to the Civil Practice and Remedies Code to specify requirements relating to defamation suits and related awards of damages. The Office of Court Administration does not anticipate a significant fiscal impact to the court system resulting from the bill. The change in law would apply only to information published on or after the bill's effective date. The bill would take effect immediately if receiving a two-thirds vote of each house, otherwise the bill would take effect September 1, 2013.
