Fiscal Analysis

The bill would require a school district to report to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) the number of students enrolled as of September 1 in each class of each grade level from kindergarten through grade 12 in the district no later than October 1 of each school year.

Methodology

Student enrollment data is currently collected in the fourth Friday of October. Based on information provided by the TEA, the estimated cost to modify the Public Education Information Management System and the Texas Student Data System to add new data collection elements to comply with the provisions of the bill would be $500,000 in fiscal year 2014 and $200,000 in subsequent years.

Local Government Impact

School districts would be required to update their local student information systems and to report the required data by October 1 of each school year, although these costs would vary between districts.
