No. 1207 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, An outstanding civic leader received well-deserved recognition when Corky Melass was named the 2011 Man of the Year by the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, Mr. Melass has operated Killum Pest Control for nearly four decades and has given back to the community in many ways; and WHEREAS, A former president of the Lake Jackson Business Association, Mr. Melass has also served as a member of the board of the Brazoria County Association for Citizens with Handicaps, Lake Jackson Emergency Medical Services, the Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences, and Ducks Unlimited; in addition, he has chaired the Brazoria County Day event that brings area residents to the State Capitol and has overseen committees for local Rotary Club functions; and WHEREAS, Mr. Melass has further shared his time and talents as a member of Campus Life and the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce, as a volunteer with the Guerrero Clinic, and as a cohost of Texas Wildlife Association youth hunts; he was honored as the Brazoria County Citizen of the Year in 2003 by The Facts newspaper and was inducted into the Junior Achievement of Brazoria County Business Hall of Fame in 2012; and WHEREAS, Born in Velasco, Mr. Melass graduated from Brazosport High School, attended Brazosport and Alvin Community Colleges, and served his country in the United States military in Vietnam; he and his wife, Vicki, have been married for 26 years, and they take great pride in their three children and six grandchildren; and WHEREAS, The strength of our communities depends on individuals like Corky Melass, whose work in behalf of area residents and businesses has contributed greatly to the quality of life in the Brazosport area; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Corky Melass on his selection as the 2011 Man of the Year by the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Melass as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
