H.R. No. 2065 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Shirley Ison-Newsome is retiring in August 2013 as assistant superintendent of Division No. 4 of the Dallas Independent School District, concluding a distinguished career in education that has spanned nearly four decades; and WHEREAS, A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Ms. Ison-Newsome graduated from Indiana University before earning master's degrees from both the University of Louisville and The Ohio State University; she moved to Dallas in 1974 and embarked on a rewarding tenure with the Dallas Independent School District, where she served as a teacher and principal with several schools, became the district's chief of staff, and was promoted to the post of area superintendent; and WHEREAS, This respected educator has garnered numerous accolades for contributions to her profession and her community; among her many honors are the Woman of the Year designation from the South Dallas Business and Professional Women's Club, the Outstanding Educators Award from The Education Archives and History Project, and the President's Award from the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas; a life member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators, she was recognized in 2009 with that group's Phenomenal Woman Award; and WHEREAS, Throughout the last four decades Shirley Ison-Newsome has been making meaningful contributions to the education of thousands of students in the Dallas area, and her achievements will have a positive effect in her community for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Shirley Ison-Newsome on her retirement from the Dallas Independent School District and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Ison-Newsome as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
