H.R. No. 207 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Those Texans who give freely of their time and talents in behalf of their community make the world a better place, and on November 4, 2012, Mary Oberlin was recognized for her lifetime of civic engagement at the second annual Exemplary Women of Irving High Tea event; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Oberlin has been active in numerous organizations and initiatives in the local area; she worked for 10 years with Irving Community Services and the United Way, helping to improve child care and to expand resources for the mentally disabled, and she participated in the United Irving campaign organized by Irving Community Hospital; as a member of Park People, she assisted in the organization and construction of Victoria Park, and she served for eight years on the Cultural Affairs Council of Irving; and WHEREAS, This dedicated volunteer played a key role in the development of the Irving Cancer Society, and her efforts to aid those in need have included service with Irving Youth and Family Counseling and with the Housing and Human Services Board, which she oversaw as president; she has also held the office of president in the Irving Woman's Club, the Las Colinas Women's Association, the Irving Heritage Society, and the Irving Symphony League, and she maintains her membership in all of those groups; moreover, she provided valuable guidance during her tenure on the Irving Community Television Network and Irving DART advisory boards; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Oberlin has further distinguished herself through her service as a member of the Irving Clinic Board and the board of La Buena Vida Foundation, which offers temporary housing to homeless teenagers; she is a longtime congregant of Plymouth Park United Methodist Church and is a former president of United Methodist Women, and she has been a member of the League of Women Voters for half a century; and WHEREAS, Mary Oberlin has benefited her fellow citizens through many years of purposeful endeavor, and in so doing, she has set an inspiring example of compassion, commitment, and generosity; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Oberlin on her selection as one of the Exemplary Women of Irving and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Oberlin as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
