No. 424 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, February 13, 2013, is University of Houston System Day at the State Capitol, and the occasion provides a fitting opportunity to recognize all those associated with the institutions that are part of this notable system; and WHEREAS, The University of Houston System is composed of the University of Houston, the University of Houston-Clear Lake, the University of Houston-Downtown, and the University of Houston-Victoria, and off-campus teaching centers UH-Sugar Land, UHS-Cinco Ranch, UHCL-Pearland, UHS-Northwest, and UHS-Texas Medical Center; with a current enrollment of 66,000 students in Southeast Texas and the Coastal Bend region, UH System components are meeting higher education needs in an area that is home to a quarter of the state's population and that generates nearly a third of the state's gross product; and WHEREAS, More than 300,000 students have graduated from the four UH System universities, and a great majority of them remain in Texas to live and work, thereby adding to the economic and social vitality of the state, and the regional economic impact of the system itself is over $3 billion annually; and WHEREAS, Today, the system benefits from the able leadership of chancellor and University of Houston president Renu Khator, University of Houston-Clear Lake president William Staples, University of Houston-Downtown president Bill Flores, and University of Houston-Victoria president Phil Castille; and WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the University of Houston System has provided students with an outstanding education and a strong foundation for the future, and in so doing, it has played a pivotal role in the prosperity of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 13, 2013, as University of Houston System Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to all those from the UH System who are visiting here today.
