No. 519 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The members of First Presbyterian Church of Garland are celebrating the 125th anniversary of their church's founding on April 21, 2013; and WHEREAS, Organized in 1888 as the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Garland, the church took its present name following the merger in 1906 of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.; First Presbyterian now numbers some 300 members, who extend a warm welcome to newcomers and who treasure the sense of being part of a large, vibrant, and caring family; and WHEREAS, In 1994, the congregation moved from its old red brick sanctuary into a new facility; stained-glass windows from the previous sanctuary provide a strong element of continuity, while the circular architectural design and fixtures of the new interior serve to remind worshipers of the circle of life; and WHEREAS, United by its shared faith and strong traditions, the congregation supports a variety of commendable programs that offer help to those in need; its outreach efforts include working with Meals on Wheels, participating in homebuilding and other mission activities in Mexico and Guatemala, and contributing to the alleviation of hunger and poverty in the third world; and WHEREAS, Countless residents have looked to First Presbyterian Church of Garland for spiritual enrichment and guidance through the years, and it is a privilege to join in honoring the church at this special time in its history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of First Presbyterian Church of Garland and extend to all those associated with the church sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
