No. 801 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Athena Chen of Carrollton has been named a 2013 Distinguished Finalist in the 18th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, thus earning distinction as one of the top youth volunteers in Texas; and WHEREAS, Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in middle school and high school who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities, and this year more than 28,000 teens from throughout the country were considered for recognition; and WHEREAS, A 16-year-old junior at Hebron High School, Ms. Chen helped found Paint the World, a program dedicated to teaching art to children in need, including those living in shelters and orphanages; she helped to raise more than $1,000 to launch the project and worked with friends on its development, making sure that children would be introduced to a variety of genres and media, including sketching, sculpting, acrylic painting, and yarn-making; the high school students who staff Paint the World provide all necessary supplies, set up each four-hour event, and clean up the venue afterwards; and WHEREAS, Ms. Chen has demonstrated remarkable initiative and determination in the pursuit of a worthy goal, and this outstanding young Texan is a source of inspiration to all who are privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Athena Chen on her selection as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Chen as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
