                    LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD    Austin, Texas      FISCAL NOTE, 83RD LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION            May 15, 2013      TO: Honorable David Dewhurst, Lieutenant Governor, Senate      FROM: Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board     IN RE:SB396 by Hegar (Relating to the provision of state death benefits to certain employees of the Department of Public Safety of the State of Texas.), As Passed 2nd House    No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.  The bill would amend the Government Code to expand the eligibility of state death benefits to survivors of individuals employed by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) whose principal duties directly support a law enforcement function by the state or individuals with certain special assignments, as certified by the director. DPS and the Employees Retirement System anticipate that any costs associated with implementing the bill could be absorbed within existing resources. The bill would take effect on September 1, 2013, and would apply only to deaths that occurred after that date. Local Government Impact No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
