SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1032
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
honoring Joyce Lavergne Stewart Smith on the occasion of her 80th
birthday, on June 3, 2013; and
WHEREAS, This gracious lady and loyal friend is being
celebrated in the presence of her many admirers on June 1, 2013;
over the years, she has inspired countless individuals, who
revere her for her wise counsel, her love for life, and her
kindhearted nature; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1933 in Big Sandy, Joyce Smith grew up
with six brothers; in 1954, she married her sweetheart, Bobbie
Smith, whose work as an oil and gas man took the family to points
across Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Regardless of where the family lived, Mrs. Smith
created a comfortable home, was a gracious hostess, and made many
friends, and she was an encouraging mother to her three sons,
Richard, Steve, and Bill; and
WHEREAS, As Mr. Smith prepared to retire, the couple
purchased a farm in Marshall, where they grew blackberries and
raspberries and ran a pick-your-own operation; Mrs. Smith made
any extra berries into delicious jams and jellies and sold them
in Jefferson and elsewhere; and
WHEREAS, After her husband passed away, Mrs. Smith lived
for a time in Jefferson and then moved to Breaux Bridge,
Louisiana, to be close to her eldest son and his family; today,
her sons and their families and her many other loved ones,
including numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are
thrilled to have the good fortune to pay homage to the life of
this extraordinary lady; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
83rd Legislature, hereby congratulate Joyce Lavergne Stewart Smith on
her 80th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for an
enjoyable celebration of this milestone in her life; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
