SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1047 In Memory of John Evangelista Gutierrez WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of John Evangelista Gutierrez, who died May 8, 2013, at the age of 89; and WHEREAS, John was born December 27, 1923, in Hills Prairie, Texas; in the 1940s, he attended the Colegio de Montemorelos in Mexico, and in the early 1950s, he moved his family to Collegedale, Tennessee, where he attended Southern Missionary College; and WHEREAS, As a college student, he worked at the campus cabinet shop and discovered a passion for woodworking; when his classmate, Bill Hulsey, established Collegedale Cabinets, Incorporated, in 1956, John joined him in the business; the company designed and manufactured furniture for schools and other institutions; and WHEREAS, A naturally gifted craftsman, John helped to build the business over the next decades; by the time he retired in 1992, he had served as plant manager and as vice president of manufacturing; and WHEREAS, After his retirement, John returned to Texas and started his own company, Texas Wood Products, in Austin; he continued to enjoy creating beautiful pieces of furniture despite struggling periodically with health issues; and WHEREAS, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alvina; he was a proud father and a beloved brother, and he showed his family what it means to live every day to its fullest; John will be dearly missed by his children, Arthur and Sylvia, his granddaughter, Kristina, and his brothers and sisters, and many other family members; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of John Evangelista Gutierrez; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Gutierrez.
